Dongseo University (DSU) is taking action to spread Korean education and culture in Indonesia. On May 29, 2015, DSU reported that it has received official permission to establish a King Sejong Institute at Petra Christian University in Surabaya, Indonesia.
The King Sejong Institute Foundation was founded by the government and oversees its non-profit private institutes promoting Korean education, culture and enterprise. The establishment of a new King Sejong Institute in Surabaya can be seen as a result of the growing popularity of Korea-related phenomena, such as Hallyu (the “Korean Wave” in music, film and television), Korean international marriages, and overseas expansion of Korean enterprises.
DSU’s winning bid to establish a King Sejong Institute in Surabaya bested the applications of 70 organizations from 31 countries, clearly demonstrating the worldwide interest in Korean culture. Competition was particularly fierce from 16 universities in 10 countries, all of which were lauded for their stable educational environment.
DSU and Petra Christian University have conducted several exchange programs in the past and established 2 + 2 joint degree programs in Film and Digital Contents. Dr. Jekuk Chang, President of DSU, said “There are many Korean corporations in Surabaya, and the people here are very interested in Korea. Through the establishment of a King Sejong Institute, I believe Surabaya can become a hub for the spread of Korean culture.”
