On September 3rd, 2013, at a ceremony held in the international conference room of Dongseo University’s New Millennium Building, DSU President Dr. Jekuk Chang and Regent Harjanti Hadi Koesworo of the Kediri region of East Java, Indonesia, signed an agreement to promote further collaboration between their respective institutions. The collaboration agreement focuses on four main spheres of activity: outreach education programs, employee training programs, continuing volunteer services and jointly-run community programs.
This agreement continues a proud tradition for DSU, whose students have been volunteering in technical projects in Indonesia for 18 years. During this time, DSU students volunteered in Magetan, Indonesia, as well as in the Philippines, from 1996 to 2003, and have been volunteering in Kediri for the past decade.
“There has been a strong friendship between DSU and Kediri for the past 10 years,” Dr. Chang said at the ceremony. “I hope this friendship might serve as a bridge connecting Korea and Indonesia via Busan and Java.” Thanking President Chang for his hospitality, Regent Koesworo said, “We are sincerely thankful to Dongseo University for sending students every year to volunteer in Kediri.”
This summer vacation, 30 DSU International Tech. Corps volunteers installed 30 photovoltaic streetlamps and two wind power generation systems in Kediri. In addition, they repaired buildings, drew murals, and taught local residents how to make natural soap. In recognition of these works, Regent Harjanti Hadi Koesworo gave DSU President Jekuk Chang a plaque of appreciation expressing deep gratitude for the efforts of Dongseo University in performing volunteer work in Kediri.
