Graduates of the Im Kwon Taek College of Film and Performing Arts, Seo Ho-Bin and Kim Beong-Jun have been invited to show films at the Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) for the past two years, catching the attention of Korea’s film industry. Seo Ho-Bin’s ‘Mot’ (meaning, “nail”) was screened this year and Kim Beong-Jun had an opportunity to present his piece titled, ‘Gae Ddong Yi’ (a commonly occurring Korean name).
According to Kim Beong-Jun, “As a producer, to stand on stage at BIFF is like a miracle. I hope many young people interested in film can gain some confidence through our experience.”
Seo Ho-Bin’s first feature film as a director tells an engaging story about secrets among friends. More specifically, it is about four friends who share an unexpected experience, with discussions ensuing once the main characters are reunited after a period of separation.
Seo Ho-Bin and Kim Beong-Jun collaborated on ‘Mot’ as director and producer, respectively. The duo of DSU graduates also formed the production company “New Life.” As is common in the film industry, after working together the two could not give up on their connection and say goodbye. Kim Beong-Jun is keen to shoot films in Busan since he believes Busan is such a great place to make films, unlike Seoul which is saturated with producers.
In an interview, Kim Beong-Jun gave some insight into their working relationship. He mentioned that he tends to work very fast, without focusing on unimportant aspects, thereby making it possible to finish shooting films quickly. In fact, ‘Gae Ddong Yi’ was shot in only 10 days. “On the other hand,” he said, “Seo Ho-Bin is very careful; he cares about every detail. That is why we initially experienced some friction in making our film.” Nevertheless, their mutual admiration for each other’s vision allowed them to respect one another and to overcome their differences.
Seo Ho-Bin is very optimistic about ‘Mot’. He said, “Now we are waiting for invitations from other overseas film festivals. Hopefully a day will come when we will be wearing our perfectly pressed tuxedos and hitting the red carpet.”
