Campus Asia Project

In the Korea-China-Japan trilateral summit held in May 2010, the three countries agreed to expand exchanges between universities, proceeding with the ‘Campus Asia’ project which was benchmarked after ‘ERASMUS’, a successful student exchange program between European countries.

On October 30th, the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology together with the Korean Council for University Education announced 10 teams which will participate in the Campus Asia Pilot Project. The Project is jointly supported by the Education Ministries of Korea, China and Japan and introduces a joint degree system between universities from the three nations.

Dongseo University was selected to participate in the Campus Asia project. The other Korean institutions selected include Korea University, Pusan National University, Seoul National University, Sungkyunkwan University, Pohang University of Science and Technology, KAIST and the Korea Development Institute School of Public Policy and Management. The eight Korean institutions have established consortiums with universities from China and Japan to implement the goals and objectives of the “Campus Asia” project.

Seoul University has established a consortium with Peking University and the University of Tokyo as part of this project. Thus, students who successfully complete the ‘BESETO Joint Master’s Degree Program’ will receive a joint degree in international studies and public policies issued by the three participating universities: Seoul National University (Graduate School of International Studies), Peking University (Graduate School of International Relations), and the University of Tokyo (Graduate School of Public Policy).

Dongseo University (Department of Foreign Language) has established a consortium with Guangdong University of Foreign Studies (Center of Asian Language and Culture) in China and with Ritsumeikan University (Department of Humanities) in Japan for ‘Fostering East Asian Leaders for the Next Generation’. The collaborative project will involve instruction on the three nation’s languages, histories and cultures. Students will study at the three universities and will participate in a three-month internship program prior to graduation.

Students who participate in any selected program will receive credits approved by each university from three countries. Moreover, they will have internship opportunities and will be eligible to receive a joint degree issued in their home country.

Each country will select 100 students every year (10 students per team) for an annual participation total of 300 students from three countries. Student selection methods have yet to be determined, and the criteria will be finalized after discussions between the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology and the Korean Council for University Education.

Korean students who join the ‘Campus Asia’ program may receive up to eight hundred thousand won for a roundtrip air ticket as well as an additional eight to nine hundred thousand won for living expenses.

The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology and the Korean Council for University Education will provide the eight selected institutions with approximately 124 million won for student exchange expenses and approximately 100 million won for program development per consortium over the period of 2012 to 2015.

“I think it is a great honor for the project of ‘Fostering East Asian Leaders for the Next Generation’ to be highly esteemed not only in Korea but also in China and Japan, three countries which share a deep understanding of humanities. The participating universities (Dongseo University in Korea, Ritsumeikan University in Japan, and Guangdong University of Foreign Studies in China) have jointly offered a successful internet-based, credit course for the past 5 years, and I believe that the Ministries of Education from the three countries recognized the advantages that this type of program can offer. I am confident that the three universities will contribute to building a future-oriented relationship between the three countries and will foster East Asian leaders.”

[Interview with Dr. Chen Duo You, Director of the Center of Asian Languages and Cultures, Guangdong University of Foreign Studies]
The Campus Asia Project joins Korea, China, and Japan. Its common aim is to foster the next generation of leaders equipped with knowledge of history, culture and economics. I think being selected for this project represents a first step toward developing such leadership. Guangdong University of Foreign Studies will take part in the project and will do its best to ensure the success of the project by offering support through materials and human resources. There is a Chinese proverb that says, “A council of three gives good counsel.” Likewise, I am confident in the success of this project joining endeavors from Korea, China and Japan.”

[Interview with Dr. Kiyofumi Kawaguchi, President of Ritsumeikan University]
“In the era of globalization, nurturing Asian leaders is an important responsibility of Asian universities. I am confident that this project provides an answer to the question of how best to fulfill this important responsibility. Participants in the project will have opportunities to build friendships while experiencing the cultures of the three countries involved. Furthermore, by studying together they will establish networks which can advance future research. These will provide great support in maintaining friendly relations between the three countries. I believe the cooperative efforts of the three universities resulted in their being selected for the project. I am honored, and I also feel a great sense of responsibility.”
