The 2018 Global Design Start-Up Workshop #1 was held at Dongseo University from May 11 to May 18 in collaboration with Purdue University and the Korea Institute of Design Promotion. It was the first of two DSU-Purdue joint workshops planned for 2018, as per the December 13, 2017, exchange agreement in which the two universities committed to holding two joint workshops every year. The second joint workshop will be held at Purdue University in August.

Twelve DSU Global Design Society (GDS) students took part in this year’s first workshop, along with Professors Chang Ju-young, Heo Ju-hee and Kim Hae-yoon. Representing Purdue University’s industrial design department were nine students and three professors, including Department Chairman Steve Vissor. Three design researchers from the Korea Institute of Design Promotion also participated in the workshop.

The results of the workshop will be submitted at an international design contest jointly under the names of Dongseo University, Purdue University and the Korea Institute of Design Promotion. Also, students’ ideas will be commercialized using a startup platform set up in Indianapolis, Indiana, USA.

“The joint workshop is very meaningful in that it provides Dongseo University students with an opportunity to enter the global market,” said Professor Kim Hae-yoon. “The final goal is to convert excellent products into start-up items by actively promoting this workshop and by exhibiting its results.”
