Dongseo University’s Department of Computer Science and Engineering’s Interactive MR Convergence Research Center (IMRC) had four projects selected by the Ministry of Education and the Korea Science and Technology Foundation for the 2018 Undergraduate Research Program (URP). This program supports research activities in the field of science and technology and aims to foster creativity and excellence by providing self-directed research opportunities. In 2018, 100 teams were selected through a research project competition and, of the ten projects that were selected for convergence, four were selected from Dongseo University’s IMRC Research Center.

Dongseo University’s Department of Computer Science and Engineering has won numerous awards since being selected in 2014 as an excellent specialization project (CK-1) by the Ministry of Education. In 2018, it established the IMRC to conduct research on various technologies and systems by combining VR and AR technologies, with applications in related fields such as databases, networks, software and embedded systems. Research teams comprising students from the Computer Engineering Department will carry out the four selected projects with the guidance of three computer engineering professors and a research professor. The URP-supported projects will last six months starting in July this year. The four selected teams will receive 6 million won each to carry out their tasks until the end of 2018.

URP Task 1: Smart Performance System using Li-Fi and Speech Recognition – Focusing on the Shadow Play

This project is an expansion of the Shadow Play System (tentative title) that has been carried out at the IMRC. It aims to develop a smart performance system that utilizes voice recognition and provide specialized services using Li-Fi, which is part of the 5G technology to provide contents quickly in various environments. It is not only more convenient than the existing shadow play but also increases children’s concentration.

Participating students: Kin Kun-woo, Shin Dong-hoon, Kim Sung-jae, Jeong Ji-yeon

Professor in charge: Park Chan-hong

URP Task 2: Healthcare Service Utilizing Holographic Display

This project is an expansion of Hologram Fitness (tentative title) that has been carried out at the IMRC. It uses a body composition analyzer to reflect the user’s body in 3D based on Morph technology. This research aims at developing a healthcare service that shows the results to the user visually through a holographic display device.

Participating students: Kim Ga-young, Lee Soo-hyung, Park Soo-bin, Kim Sihoo, Choi Da-hun

Professor in charge: Lee Young-sil

URP Task 3: Fire Safety Education System Using AVR

This research is an extension of the Development of Realistic VR System, which has been carried out at the IMRC. It aims to strengthen the mobility and tactile sense of limited VR education system focusing on audiovisual senses to develop a fire safety education system.

Participating students: Shin Sang-woo, Lee Ho-sup, Kim Kyung-hwan

Professor in charge: Kwon Jong-san

URP Task 4: A Study on the Application of MR Content for a Shared Accommodation Operation Platform

This study covers a typical example of a Shared Accommodation Operation Platform with explosive growth in the last five years, focusing on improvement of reliability and sharing efficiency of the shared accommodation management platform and how to apply MR content for this purpose. This project involves studying gesture and voice recognition-based access control technology for improving reliability and AR information sharing technology.

Participating students: Shin Soo-hoon, Shin Jeong-ah, Kim Do-hee, Kang Won-yoon

Professor in charge: Hong Seok-geun
