Cinema Busan, a Chronicle of Hope: New Exhibition at Im Kwon Taek Film Museum

The Im Kwon Taek Film Museum at Dongseo University’s Centum Campus held its second exhibition throughout the month of October. The theme of the exhibition was “Cinema Busan, a Chronicle of Hope”. The exhibition focused on the history of film in Busan, a city which has led the way in the development of Korean film.  

 

The special connection between Busan and film is older than most people know. From the Japanese colonization period until the 1960s, Busan functioned as Korean film’sgrowth engine. Korea’s first film production companyChosun Cinema Corporationwas established in Busan. Busan also produced many of the pioneers who blazed new trails in the early days of Korean film. And since the 1990s, Busan has grown into a global film city with the establishment of Korea’s first film festival, film commission, and cinematheque. Busan has always been at the forefront of Korean film.

 

The Im Kwon Taek Film Museum’s 2016 exhibitionCinema Busan, a Chronicle of Hopecelebrated Korean film history and provided an opportunity to rediscover Busan’s history. TheBusan Film History Mapdrawn on one wall showed the 110-year history of film in Busan. The many connections between Director Im Kwon Taek and Busan were also outlined on the map, with interesting stories about places where he stayed during his youth and where he shot his films. The videoIm Kwon Taek’s Busan, which was at the center of the exhibition, explored Busan through Director Im’s work.

 

On October 7, the exhibition’s opening ceremony was attended by Director Im Kwon Taek and several actors and actresses who starred in his films, including Ahn Sung-ki, Shin Seong-il, and Kim Hee-ra. Chairman Kim Dong-ho and Director Kang Soo-yeon of the Busan International Film Festival, Korean Film Council Chairman Kim Sae-hoon, and Korean Film Archive Director Ryu Jae-lim also attended the ceremony.
