Abstract

The number of female characters appearing in animations has been increased, along with the development of Chinese modern animations, feminist struggles and improved status of females. The female characters in animations have shortcoming, in that they do not fit with the values of modern females and have no distinctive ethnic characteristics. This study was, therefore, focused on describing female characters in animations and establishes an analytic framework of gesture language. In arranging previous studies, it was found that Kim Misuk’s thesis, analyzed the Disney Animation by extracting 12 gestures shown by females, among human gestures, and establishing the analytic framework of females’gesture language.
In order to establish the analytic framework of females’gesture language in Chinese animations, this study was initially conducted in two aspects. First, human gesture language was found to be widely applied to various fields, by arranging scholars’ theories. It was, however, relatively complex to extract animation characters’ gestures, so it was difficult to adequately analyze female characters in Chinese animations. Second, the analytic framework of females’gesture language, developed by Kim Misuk was found to be by and large useful for analyzing female characters in modern Chinese animations, by arranging Chinese theses and interviewing with 15 experts engaging in Chinese animations. The use of only her analytic framework of females’gesture language in animations was not enough to analyze the Chinese animations. By arranging Chinese theses and interviewing with the experts, it was found that the factors ultimately affecting females’ gestures in animations are Confucian ideas’ regulations on females and traditional comic motions.
This study largely categorized four parts including heads, arms and hands, trunks, and legs and feet according to the structure of the human body, in extracting the characteristics of Chinese females’ gestures. In addition, it resolved the third question, ‘what are the detailed factors of females’ gesture language in Chinese animations.’ raised by the introduction, by categorizing and extracting females’ motions from Chinese history literature, poems, paintings and dramas regarding the classical females. The analytic framework on which the analysis on female characters’ gestures in Chinese animations was based was created by integrating the motions extracted with the analytic framework of females’ gestures, created by Kim Misuk, and drawing a total of 24 gestures from questionnaires administered to 35 experts.
In the part of verification, the validity of the analytic framework of females’ gestures in Chinese animations is verified, by analyzing female characters’ gestures in Chinese classical and modern animations. Since characters use both females’ and males’ gestures, the part of analysis uses the analytic framework of males’gesture language in animations, Kim Mijsuk suggested in her thesis, . In addition, this study categorizes female characters in Chinese classical and modern animations into three types such as subjects, helpers and opponents, based on Greimas’s model of actors in narrative stories. At the same time, it symbolizes female characters’ gestures in Chinese animations and males’ gestures in animations developed by Kim Misuk and analyzes the gestures used by three types of female characters with four basic feelings consisting of delight, sadness, fear/surprise and anger/disgust. Gestures are characterized by strong direction, so a joint evaluation method in which other three researchers, who take the doctor’s course in the same major field, participate is adopted to enhance the objectivity of the analysis, in evaluating gestures used for characters.
The findings demonstrate that 24 gestures in the analytic framework of female characters’ gesture language in Chinese animations are suitable for the analysis on female characters’gesture language in Chinese animation. In addition, it was also found that female characters have the following three commonalities when they use gesture language in classical and modern animations.
First, all female characters are expressed with more gestures of females and less gestures of males. Second, more gestures of males and less gestures of females are used to express anger/disgust. Third, opponents are expressed with more gestures of males and less gestures of females, compared with subjects and helpers, among female characters. Meanwhile, three differences are as follows:
First, female characters in modern animations always use more gestures of males, whatever feelings they express, than those in classic animations. Second, the‘smiling while staring at others(H-7)’motion is often used by opponents in classical animations, but also used by characters such as subjects or helpers who express their delight in modern animations. Third, the ‘light walking(L-2)’ motion is used by subject characters who express delight in classical animation or sadness in modern animations
In the aspect of history, modern female characters are affected by feminism, so they realize the historical independence of females, by using more gestures of males, compared with classical female characters.
In the aspect of characters’ types, opponent characters express their ambitions by using less gestures of females and more gestures of males, compared with characters such as subjects or helpers, which has no direct relation with the historical flow.
In the aspect of feelings, all types of female characters express their sissified temperament with more gestures of females, for most of feelings, while they express their attitudes by decreasing gestures of females and increasing those of males, for anger. This paper is expected to contribute to creating female characters in Chinese animations.
