Dongseo University Becomes First Korean Institution Approved as a Member of the World Design Organization (WDO)
Dongseo University has recently achieved a significant milestone by being officially recognized as a member of the World Design Organization (WDO), becoming the first university in Korea to join this prestigious body. This accomplishment places Dongseo University among premier global design universities, alongside esteemed institutions such as Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) in the United States, Royal College of Art (RCA) in the United Kingdom, Politecnico di Milano in Italy, Tsinghua University and Tongji University in China, and Musashino Art University in Japan, thereby integrating it into a global network of design excellence.
The World Design Organization, the largest non-profit design organization worldwide, comprises over 200 member institutions from more than 60 countries. The organization is dedicated to fostering a sustainable future and enhancing quality of life through various design disciplines, including industrial design. Full membership offers institutions the opportunity to collaborate with global design leaders and participate in international programs such as the World Design Congress, World Design Capital®, and World Design Talks.
With this new membership, Dongseo University is poised to enhance its collaborations with universities and industries around the world through WDO's official design education network. Students at Dongseo University can anticipate enriched academic experiences and expanded professional networking opportunities on a global scale. The WDO plans to publicize Dongseo University’s membership in its global newsletter and through its official social media channels in May.
Jang Juyoung, Dean of the College of Design at Dongseo University, remarked, "Joining the WDO represents the culmination of our university's long-standing vision for 'glocal design education.' This milestone is pivotal as we strive to play a significant role in Busan’s ambition to become a World Design Capital (WDC). We are excited that this opportunity will enable our students to gain a broader global perspective and access world-class educational experiences alongside leading design institutions worldwide."
This recognition is anticipated to not only bolster Dongseo University's development as an international hub for design education and research but also elevate the standing of Korean design education on a global platform. The College of Design at Dongseo University aims to leverage this opportunity to explore new avenues within the global design network, foster international collaborations and research, and take a proactive role in promoting sustainable design practices.
