Dongseo University Showcases Strategic Design Leadership in Busan’s Bid for
World Design Capital 2028
The Power of Glocal Design Education on the Global Stage
Dongseo University played a key role in supporting Busan’s bid to host the World Design Capital (WDC) 2028, demonstrating its identity as a glocal design education institution that bridges the local community and the global stage.
On June 17, 2025, the World Design Organization (WDO) evaluation team, visiting Korea for the WDC inspection, officially visited Dongseo University. As the only WDO member university in Korea, Dongseo University welcomed the team and highlighted its contributions to design education and community engagement.
The visit was carefully organized to showcase the university’s strengths. It began with a meeting with the President and Vice Presidents, followed by an exhibition of virtual exhibition space design projects created by students in the Korea-China joint education program, a presentation on design practices connecting the global and local communities by the College of Design, and a screening of media artworks reinterpreting the Dongnae Hakchum (Crane Dance) intangible cultural heritage. The visit concluded with a gift presentation and photo session.
The program opened with an English introduction by an Indonesian international student, setting an inclusive tone for the visit. Undergraduate and graduate students presented their global and community-based design projects, guided the evaluation team in English, and engaged in discussions, effectively demonstrating Dongseo University’s internationalized educational environment.
This visit highlighted Dongseo University’s balanced model of community-rooted education and global collaboration under the slogan “From Campus to the World, Rooted in Community.” Moving forward, the university will continue strengthening its role as a central institution for design education in Asia through its partnership with WDO and will actively pursue its educational philosophy of “social contribution through design,” building a glocal design ecosystem where local communities, global networks, and international students grow together.
The official announcement of the host city for the World Design Capital 2028 will be made at a later date.
