Dongseo University (DSU) has been selected for the University Educational Capability Reinforcement Project for the fourth year in a row, as a result of which it will receive government financing equal to 3.4 billion won. This follows the awarding 3.8 billion won in 2009, 3.4 billion won in 2010, and 2.4 billion won in 2011. These grants have contributed to the development of the university’s educational capacity. On 12 April 2012, the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology and the Korean Council for University Education published a list of universities to receive support by the University Educational Capability Reinforcement Project in 2012. Selections were based on core indicators of educational conditions and achievements. Support was awarded to 97 universities, which the two organizations provide at an average rate of 1.83 billion won per year.

The amount of support provided to each university is determined according to a formula based on educational indicators as well as on student enrollment. The core educational indicators evaluated include post‐graduation employment rates, student supplement rates, scholarship rates, retainment of teaching staff, academic affairs, and curriculum administration. The overall budget for support is 181.1 billion won.

Six universities in Busan were selected, including DSU, Dong‐A University, Dong‐Eui University, Pukyong National University, Busan National University of Education, and Korea Maritime University. Four universities in Ulsan and Gyeongnam were selected, including Gyeongsang National University, Chinju National University of Education, the University of Ulsan, and Inje University. These universities may use the support provided to further their individual development strategies for improvement of educational capacity.

President of DSU Chang Jekuk said, “DSU competed against other major universities which have more than 10 thousand enrolled students, and was selected in the University Educational Capability Reinforcement Project. The selection was based on objective data such as post‐graduation employment rates and student supplement rates. This indicates the confidence of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology and the Korean Council for University Education regarding the internal stability and positive results of education programs at Dongseo University.”
