On the 28th of March 2013, DSU will officially open its Centum City Campus located in the Haeundae district of Busan, approximately 20 km from its main campus in the Sasang district. The new campus will add an additional dimension to the university through its close connection with the world-famous Busan International Film Festival (BIFF), initiated in 1966.

This campus will also soon be home to the Im Kwon Taek College of Film & Performing Arts, which was founded at DSU in 2007 and named after internationally renowned director Im Kwon Taek, who was appointed as its first Dean. This prestigious college comprises three departments: Film & Video, Musical Theater, and Theater & Film Acting.

The Centum City Campus is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities for editing, shooting, and sound as well as lecture rooms, practice rooms, and a performance art hall seating an audience of up to 1126 people. DSU has undoubtedly invested a lot to ensure the Im Kwon Taek College of Film & Performing Arts is able to offer the highest quality of education to its students, 500 of whom have already begun taking classes at the new location this semester.

Dongseo University aims to establish an innovative model of cooperation between academia and industry through its new campus, the close proximity of which to other major film institutions such as the Busan Cinema Center, the Korean Film Council, and the Busan Culture Contents Complex will facilitate collaboration.

Director Im Kwon Taek’s career in film spans more than five decades, beginning in the early 1960’s, and the Museum of Cinema bearing his name at the Centum City Campus will offer glimpses into the various changes Korean cinema has undergone over the last half century. The museum, which will have six viewing rooms displaying the history of the Korean film industry through re-created movie sets, is intended not only to honor the lifework of Director Im Kwon Taek but also to attract tourists.

The new museum will have a synergistic effect as part of the movie theme street that Haeundae district officials have announced plans to create in an effort to attract tourists to the area. The eight kilometers between the Busan Cinema Center and Haeundae’s Moon-tan Road will have five main sightseeing theme areas. Plans for this project are supported by the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

Earlier this month DSU’s President Dr. Jekuk Chang announced, “It is not necessary to copy the programs operated by competitive universities in Seoul to establish a successful local university. We’re planning customized curriculums with the support of our many local community resources associated with the film industry. We hope to attract students from divers regions by providing them with unique opportunities. ”
