Busan Metropolitan City and Dongseo University recently co-hosted the 2013 Asia International Design Symposium, which was held at DSU and sponsored by the Korean clothing company Parkland. 'Culture and Design' was the main theme of discussion at the symposium, which was set with the goal of considering designs from different cultural perspectives. The three-day event involved research talks and debates by fashion design experts, graduate school students, and distinguished professors from Korea, China, Japan, Malaysia, and Indonesia.

Ahn Sang Soo of the Paju Typography Institute gave the keynote speech titled 'Small Design, Big Design'. In his speech, he suggested that the era of sticking to big design was over, adding that this has shifted focus toward the importance of smaller design aspects. He also emphasized that small design details have previously attracted too little attention within the design industry.

The symposium comprised thirty paper presentations and four debate sessions as well as a talk jointly delivered by invited professors Ahn Byung Jin of DSU’s Visual Design Department and Kawachi Domoki of Kyushu Sangyo University in Japan. Their presentation was titled 'International Culture and Public Design'.
