2025 Korea-China Urban Design Symposium

Lecture by Professor Byungjin Ahn: Professor from the Graduate School of Design of Dongseo University

<Urban Design and Branding in Korea> Lecturer : Professor Ahn, Director of the Public Design & Lighting Research Institute of Dongseo University


On April 25, 2025, the 2025 Korea-China Urban Design Symposium was held at the Academy of Arts & Design, Tsinghua University, one of China’s most prestigious institutions. The symposium was co-hosted by the Academy of Arts & Design at Tsinghua University and Korea’s Better City Design Forum, under the theme:"Eastern Scenery: Research and Practice of Modern Urban Development, Regeneration, and Design in Korea and China." Professor Byung Jin Ahn from the Graduate School of Design at Dongseo University was invited as a lecturer for the event.

The symposium was participated urban design experts including Korean professors and public officials from the Better City Design Forum, corporate executives, professors and students from Tsinghua University, and urban design professionals and scholars from various parts of China.

In his congratulatory speech, Dean Ma Sai(马赛) of the Academy of Arts & Design at Tsinghua University emphasized the significance of this event, where urban scholars and professionals from Korea and China came together for meaningful exchange. Following his remarks, Professor Byung Jin Ahn from the Graduate School of Dongseo University gave a lecture on the topic of “Urban Design and Branding in Korea” as the Korean representative speaker.

During the lecture, Professor Ahn discussed how the identity of successful global city branding is shifting from noun-oriented cities to verb-oriented cities, highlighting the transformation of symbols and slogans, as well as the move from visualizing form to visualizing behavior. He presented real-life case studies of urban design branding projects in Korea, which were well received by the audience.

Professor Ahn noted the special significance of this symposium, as it took place at the very institution led by Dean Ma Sai(马赛), a proud alumnus of Dongseo University's Graduate School who graduated 20 years ago.
