Inaugural DSU Poetry and Essay Contest

With the aim of drawing out literary talent, the inaugural Dongseo University Poetry and Essay Contest received submissions from April 14th to 29th. The focus of the contest was “Parents”. 194 students submitted 262 poems and essays. After careful consideration, 22 students were selected to receive awards for their literary efforts.
In the poetry section, Mun Sa Rang, a junior majoring in Marketing, was awarded the grand prize for her poem entitled “Magnolia”. She had submitted “Magnolia” along with four other poems. Kim Hye Jin, who studies Creative Writing, submitted two poems, one of which, “Star and You,” received a first place prize. Min Byung Soo, a senior majoring in English, submitted three poems of which “Father’s Song” was also selected for a first place prize in the poetry section. An additional two more first place prizes for poetry were also awarded.
In the essay section, “Mt. Hwangryung” by Lee Song from the Division of Visual Communication was selected for the grand prize. “Tear” by Hyun Jeong Min, also from the Division of Visual Communication, and “The Greatest Woman in the World” by Song Ji Hyang, Social Welfare student, received first place prizes as well.
The grand prize winners received two overseas airfare tickets for travel with a parent valued at about 1,400,000 won. The judges were Kim Eon Ha, a professor in the Department of Chinese, and Lee Hae Nyeon, a professor of Creative Writing. According to both professors, the number of excellent submissions made it especially hard to select the winner.
The grand prize awards presentation was held at Sohyang Art Hall on May 6th at a ceremony for parents invited to DSU to celebrate Parents’ Day. The second awards ceremony was held in the Student Plaza lobby on May 19th.
