The Asia Design Center for Future (ADCF), a research center affiliated with DSU, has been very active since opening the DSU Design for Social Innovation and Sustainability (DESIS) Lab in June 2019. In turn, the 'DESIS Network' is an international network through which leading design universities around the world exchange and communicate with each other in pursuit of social innovation and sustainability through design. Member universities include the Italian Politecnico di Milano in Milan; the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California; The New School’s Parsons School for Design in New York; Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Tsinghua University in Beijing; and Tongji University in Shanghai. In Korea, Seoul National University and Yonsei University are participating in addition to DSU.

One important role of the DSU-DESIS Lab is to share the vision of DSU’s Design College with

the world. Specifically, that of 'cultivating global talents who are committed to the world through creative design,' through which the College seeks to encourage community change through design proposals and practices through regional-based collaboration. To that end, it looks to cement its role as a ‘Change-Maker’ that brings about small changes in society by identifying regional problems and encouraging community participation in formulating and implementing solutions to them.

In the second semester of 2019, Design College students under the supervision of Division of Design Professor Ahn Byeong-jin continued the decade-long ‘DMZ Haemaru Village Design Art Village Project,’ while another group under the supervision of Design College Professor Lee Myeong-hee set upon the process of communicating design to the world through projects such the promoting of the ‘Gamcheon Culture Village Guide Map.’ Following on from those initiatives, at the beginning of 2020 the DSU-DESIS Lab’s activities were updated to include Design College Professor Lee Seong-pil’s ‘Building a Vertical Farm of Hope Village in Sujeong-dong, Busan,’ as well as an additional project to build an art village in the DMZ region by Professor Ahn. These activities were extensively covered in the DESIS Network’s February newsletter and publicized through social media, with further details about both projects being available to download from the DESIS Network homepage.

Through the DSU-DESIS Lab, the ADCF looks forward to further implementing its goals to share and spread various regional-based social innovation design activities conducted at DSUs Design College with the world, both in 2020 and beyond.
