On November 20th, DSU students received the Grand Prize in the “How to Make a Peaceful City” video clip contest, which was organized to generate ideas on how to make Busan a peaceful, international city.

The contest was held on the second day of “The 10th Hankyoreh-Busan International Symposium,” co-hosted by Hankyoreh Newspaper and Busan City. The symposium was hosted in the Grand Ballroom at Busan Haeundae Paradise Hotel. Its main theme asked, “Can a brand new Asia be led by Asia?”

Busan is a symbolic city and home to Korea’s United Nations Memorial Cemetery. The contest sought to discover further ways of making Busan a bridgehead for better inter-Korean relations and for peace in Northeast Asia.

Only six video clips were selected in the contest. The Grand Prize, also known as the “Chairman of the Congress Prize,” worth 1.5 million won, went to four DSU students for their piece titled, “Lighthouse of Peace.” This work displays the progress the team made in building a lighthouse on Haeundae Beach. It also presents images reminding people of the horrors of war and invites viewers to submit messages of peace via smartphone.

One of the four DSU students on the winning team, Jang Hye-min, spoke of her aspirations saying, “I'll try my best to make Busan an international city.”
