Dongseo University students Kim Tae-hyun (Senior in Fashion Design), Song Sang-ho (Senior in Industrial Design) and Lee Eun-san (Senior in Visual Design) established a business called 'EARTHGROUND', which produces up-cycled products from coffee grounds.
Though they have different majors, these students have jointly become interested in sustainable design through the LINC (Leaders in Industry-University Cooperation) program and through DAIP (Dongseo Asia Initiatives Program), which led to their fusion project.
"I decided to establish a business after hearing news introducing diverse application methods of coffee grounds. In my view, those methods looked uncertain to reduce the increasing amounts of coffee grounds," said Kim Tae-hyun, one of the ‘EARTHGROUND’ founders.
Discarded coffee grounds create a waste problem. Discarded coffee grounds can acidify the soil and generate carbon dioxide. The goal of the ‘EARTHGROUND’ founders is to solve this problem through making better value beyond recycling.
According to Song Sang-ho, "At this very moment, waste materials are pouring out. Some of those are recycled, but the majority are dumped at sea or buried in the ground. We want to create new value out of once-precious products by renewing them."
The members are doing everything from picking up coffee grounds to researching diverse application methods. They are busy producing products, managing their blog, and making a video for promotion.
'EARTHGROUND', alternatively called 'Design for Earth by Three Men', is selling three products including a 'Ground Clock' and two kinds of 'Ground Pots'. These goods are made of coffee grounds and eco-friendly materials. Each product they produce is among only such eco-friendly clocks or pots in the world.
The products are available for sale at the crowd funding site, Wadiz (http://www.wadiz.kr/Campaign/Details/587) until March 20th.
Lee Eun-san tells us that the group has big plans for the future. "I'd like to up-cycle more kinds of waste materials. We are attempting to establish a research center to create added value, and also planning to launch a fair trade campaign for vulnerable groups in coffee plantations."
