The first ever non-US Amazon Cloud Innovation Center officially opened on August 29 at Dongseo University’s Centum Campus. In attendance at the opening ceremony were Dr. Jekuk Chang, President of Dongseo University; Peter Moore,Regional Managing Director for Amazon Web Services - Global Public Sector, APAC and Japan;Seo Tae-geon, Director of the Busan IT Promotion Agency; Kim Yun-il, Director of the New Growth Engine Industry Bureau; and Kwon Myung-sook, Representative of Intel Korea.

The establishment of the Amazon Cloud Innovation Center at Dongseo University marks the first time Amazon Web Service (AWS), a subsidiary of Amazon, the world’s largest e-commerce company, has established such a center outside the United States. AWS, the world’s number one cloud service company with around one million customers, provides the most comprehensive cloud platform service in the world.

Using a virtual server to store data, cloud technology is a growing field in the IT market, and international competition for preeminence in the industry is intense. AWS chose to build its first non-US center in Busan because the city has some of the world’s best conditions for a cloud hub: it has a stable electricity supply, a low frequency of earthquakes, and what is arguably the world’s bestcommunications network. Busan was also considered an ideallocation by Amazon Web Services as a hub to the Asian marketwhere the demand for cloud-related services is rising.

At the opening ceremony, DSU, AWS, and the Busan IT Industry Promotion Agency also signed an agreement for building a cloud campus and for cooperation between students and cloud industry specialists. Through the Amazon Cloud Innovation Center, Dongseo University and AWS will support the development of Busan’s cloud industry by offering cloud technology and providing education related to cloud and big data. They will also help Busan ICT companies to develop services software using AWS’s platform, while searching for promising startups, investing venture capital, and supporting overseas expansion and other related human development projects.

On that day, along with the opening of the Amazon Cloud Innovation Center, Dongseo University also opened a supporting space for startups, which consists of a Startup Room, a Conference Room, a Lecture Room, a Mentoring Room, and a café on the 11thfloor of the Centum Campus. Dongseo University, having been selected as an Agency for Managing Leading Venture Businesses, will receive around 54 billion won from the Korean government over the next three years and will provide support for startups, systematic education, and mentoring. By cooperating with the Amazon Cloud Innovation Center, Dongseo University plans to become a hub for startups related to the high-tech ICT fusion and digital contents industry.

At the opening ceremony, DSU President Jekuk Chang said, “As Dongseo University cooperates with AWS, the world’s best cloud computing services company, in establishing the Amazon Cloud Innovation Center, we are poised to take the lead in finding and supporting promising new startups.”
