The traditional rural-style production (Suyeong yarue) group known as “Shiutoe” in the Im Kwon Taek College of Film & Performing Arts at Dongseo University was awarded the Grand Prize and three million won in prize money during the 19th Annual Madangnori Festival. The festival, which was held at Seoul Olympic Park, features traditional Korean outdoor performances by university students.
Seventeen teams participated in the event, and the performances showcased various Korean Intangible Cultural Assets, such as mask dances (Talchum) and traditional Korean music of farmers (Nongak).
President of Shiutoe Choi Hyun-Wu said, “I was able to learn the beauty and greatness of Korean culture, and I feel honored to inherit the spirit of Suyeong yarue, which exemplifies our traditional rural heritage.”
Cho Ki-Wang, the adviser from the Performing Arts Department said, "I'm happy to have been awarded the Grand Prize of a national contest after also recently receiving the Gold Prize in a similar youth art festival.”
Suyeong yarue, which is the Important Intangible Cultural Heritage item No.43, has a history of roughly two hundred years and was originally performed in Suyeong-dong, Nam-gu, Busan. A number of elementary schools, middle schools, high schools and universities continue to perform Suyeong yarue to keep its spirit alive.
