Dongseo University’s 2013 UNICEF Awoo Doll Exhibition was held on the first floor of DSU’s Design Hall at 3 p.m. on December 4th. This was the fourth edition of the event since Professor Roh Yoon-Seon of the DSU Fashion Design department first organized it in 2010. This year’s edition was staged by Dongseo University Fashion Design students, with the proceeds going to child victims of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines.
The history of the UNICEF Awoo Doll Exhibition goes back to 1992, when it was held for the first time in Italy. Dolls at the exhibition could be purchased - “adopted” - for a price that included a generous donation intended to defray the cost of vaccinations and mosquito nets for needy children in developing countries. The event has since spread to many other countries around the world.
At Dongseo University this year, students made dolls ranging between one and two feet in height and between 30,000 to 50,000 won in price. In all, 64 students from DSU’s Creative Fashion Design Route Laboratory and four graduate Fashion Design students took part in the event, along with Professor Roh Yoon-Seon, who said that “the generosity of our students will help the children and give them hope.”
Mr. Oh Jong-Nam, President of the Korean Committee for UNICEF, expressed his gratitude to DSU’s Fashion Design department, together with the hope that the doll exhibition will raise awareness and encourage Korean people to do all they can to help needy children around the world.
