The forum’s aim was to discuss fostering international leaders in the era of Asia, and to develop collaborations and programs between the universities.

On October 29th, 2012, the opening ceremony of the 11th Asian University Presidents Forum was held at Sohyang Art Hall at Dongseo University. The main theme of this year’s forum was ‘The Era of Asia: Creating a Cooperative Network of Asian Universities.’

The Asian University Presidents Forum was established in 2002 to encourage development of higher education in Asia through collaborations between Asian institutions of higher learning. It has been held annually since its inception.

The 2012 Asian University Presidents Forum was held from the 28th through to the 31st of October at Dongseo University’s main campus (Jurye-dong, Sasang-gu), at the Centum campus and at the Grand Hotel in Haeundae, Busan.

There were 68 universities, including Guangdong University of Foreign Studies in China, The University of Malaya in Malaysia, Bangkok University in Thailand and Norton University in Cambodia. This was the largest number of participants to have ever attended the forum. It took 20 minutes to introduce the participating universities’ presidents.

In the welcoming speech, President Je Kuk Chang said, “I am honored to host this important event at Dongseo University and would like to thank the 140 delegates from 68 universities for coming to the forum. The Asian University Presidents Forum will facilitate collaborations between us and improve the quality of education. It will also offer numerous possibilities and opportunities to both staff and students alike. Asian universities should work together to foster future leaders at international levels.”

Jong-Hae Kim, Vice Mayor for Administrative Affairs of Busan Metropolitan City Government, and Ki-Seob Kim, President of Pusan National University, remarked on his congratulatory speech, “on behalf of the citizens of Busan, I would like to extend my congratulations on opening the Asian University Presidents Forum.” Secretary General of ASEAN-Korea Center, Hae Moon Chung and Mathana Santiwat, President of Bangkok University, also gave congratulatory speeches.

After the speeches, Dr. Charles E. Morrison, President of East-West Center in the University of Hawaii, delivered the keynote speech about “New Directions in Regional Cooperation in Higher Education.”

The opening ceremony ended with a fusion percussion performance. The following afternoon, there were discussion sessions about examples of university internationalization, collaboration between Asian countries to cultivate global talent, and the vision of the Asian education market at Minseok Library.

On October 30th, 2012, the second day of the forum, they discussed proposing the Busan Statement of 2012 Asian University Presidents Forum, and designating the AUPF Secretariat of the Asian University Presidents Forum. There was a musical performance by Dongseo students, as well as discussion sessions.

On October 31st, the closing day of the 2012 Asian University Presidents Forum, the Busan Statement was officially announced.

‘The Era of Asia’ in the theme of the forum means more than words. 4.2 billion people, 60% of the world’s population, live in Asia, and hold 27% of the world GDP. Asian universities are entrusted with the important mission of cultivating talented individuals as future leaders in the era of Asia.
