Unforgettable Experiences of Song Yun-jeong:Recipient of a Gucci Scholarship

I will never forget the twentieth of February, 2013. I was waiting excitedly in front of the Gucci showroom, which was filled with people in the fashion industry. The show was about to start and I was moments away from meeting Frida Giannini, a creative director at Gucci.

After the show ended, I was taken to the Gucci head office in Milan, where I was presented with my scholarship certificate from the Italian fashion house.

I was extremely nervous when I arrived at the Gucci headquarters. I was worried about making a mistake in front of Patrizo di Marco, the chief executive officer of Gucci.

As CEO of Gucci, Patrizo di Marco is presented as a charismatic perfectionist by the media. I glimpsed a different side of his personality when I presented him with a card thanking him for the scholarship. He grasped my hand and said kindly, “You can succeed. Pursue your dream.” His warm-hearted comments filled me with an overwhelming sense of pride and accomplishment. To be told “You CAN do it” by someone you respect and admire is a great feeling.

There were so many memorable events that happened during the course of my trip, including meeting Frida Giannini on the runway at the Gucci show and meeting Patrizo di Marco at the Gucci head office. However, one moment stands out above all others: I will never forget the joy I felt when I saw the sign that said “Chosen by Frida” written above the ‘Bamboo Handbag’ I had designed. I will carry that feeling with me for the rest of my life.

I can vividly recall a presentation I gave about Frida Giannini when I was a freshman. It was at that time I started to study fashion seriously. Her actions as the creative director of Gucci, after the legendary Tom Ford, inspired me to study fashion and strengthened my resolve to become a fashion designer. She led the Gucci brand with her own sense of style, one which I greatly admire. Frida Giannini is one of my biggest idols in the fashion industry.

I think being chosen as a recipient of a Gucci scholarship is a turning point for me. I was beginning to doubt my dream of becoming a fashion designer. I was wondering if I could succeed. My resolve was weakening. I was starting to question myself, and my uncertainty was distracting me from my goals. This experience has allowed me to concentrate on my dream; I am inspired and energized. I CAN do it!

It must be said that the biggest reason I was able to receive the scholarship and have this unbelievable experience is the fact that I am a DSU student. Dongseo University has numerous programs, which I actively searched to seize the opportunities available. Through the many programs at DSU, I gained the knowledge I needed to succeed.

It was during the previous vacation that I participated in a program called the ‘Fused Form Fashion Bag Project’. This program taught me about high-end luxury bags, particularly about the crafting of high-end bags, the treatment of leather bags, the misconceptions of luxury brands, and the many details students should be aware of in designing and producing bags.

The organization of this program by professors in the Fashion Design and Product Design departments enabled me to gain the experience I needed, and I am especially thankful to Professor Jung Ji-wook, the program director, who took the time to tutor me in the basics of how to plan and design the detailed parts of bags.

There is also a class at DSU called ‘Creative Route’ in the Fashion Design department, taught by Professor Roh Yoon-sun. The focus of the class was Oriental artwork, and in it I investigated Korean painting. This class gave me the necessary tools to design more confidently during the second round of the Gucci scholarship competition.

Without the knowledge and abilities I gained at DSU through its specialized programs, I could not have produced a project deserving favorable attention from Frida Giannini. Dongseo University gave me the skill set I needed to succeed. I could never have achieved all that I have accomplished on my own.

I want to tell everyone that they can learn and grow a lot by participating in the various programs that DSU provides. Through these programs they can not only prepare for their future but also achieve their dreams.

Although I was frustrated and nearly gave up on my dream, DSU helped me to persevere and succeed. I will be forever thankful to Dongseo University for making my dream come true.
