Noh Ji Hoon (senior, Department of Industry Design), Park Ju Hyun (senior, Department of Industry Design), and Park Dong Min (junior, Department of Industry Design) received the Education Award in Design Concepts at Germany’s Red Dot Design Awards. The awards ceremony was held in Singapore on October 15. The winning concepts receive the ‘Red Dot’ mark, certifying the concept as having outstanding design quality. The students made a set of colored pencils called, “Feelor Touches the Color”, or just ‘Feelor’ for short. They are made especially for the use of blind children. The design of the pencils allows children to distinguish a color when the pencil is touched at the top. For example, if the pencil is red, the top has an apple shape and if the pencil is yellow, the top of the pencil has the shape of a chick, with other colors having differing representations. Park Ju Hyun said that cultural differences were carefully considered and they created the design for worldwide acceptance. She tried to consider a design that could be put to common use anywhere. Noh Ji Hoon said he researched what disabled people needed in schools for the blind and for this he won the Public Subscription Award. He wanted to design a product that everyone could use without discrimination.
