Professors, students, and alumni of the Im Kwon Taek College of Film and Media Arts collaborated to produce The Magician. Kim Dae-seung, a professor in Dongseo University’s Film & Video department, was the director, and many students worked as film production managers, sound engineers, lighting technicians, and actors.

The film was released in cinemas across the country on December 30, 2015. It is currently showing and receiving great reviews. This shared accomplishment is an example of Dongseo University’s motto, “Before Dongseo, After Dongseo” (or, BDAD).

The film is set during the Manchu invasion of Korea in 1636. The story is about the love, struggle, and perseverance of the best magician of the Joseon dynasty. Central characters in film are Princess Cheong-myung (played by actress Go Ara), who was to be married and become the 11th princess of the Qing dynasty, and Hwan-hee (played by Yoo Seung-ho), the best magician of Joseon, whose love for the princess was never to be realized.

Director Kim Dae-seung has been recognized for his work in other films such as The Concubine, Blood Rain, and Bungee Jumping of Their Own. Supporting actors included Jo Yoon-hee, Lee Gyeong-yeong, Kwak Do-won, Park Cheol-min, and Jo Dal-hwan, among others.

Other participants included production manager Kim Tae-Jin (class of 2004), production department member Lee Jong-myeong (class of 2007), Yoo Da-sol (class of 2010), recording team member Kim Ji-su (class of 2012), lighting team member Lee Joong-wan (class of 2005), directing team member Lee Choong-hyeon (class of 2009), and Lee Yoon-mi (class of 2010).

Extras in the movie from the Department of Acting included Maid 1 (Lee Hye-rim, class of 2013), Maid 2 (Lim Seo-yeong, class of 2012), Man on the street (Cha Seung-ook, class of 2008), Walking actress (Lee Hye-jin, class of 2008), Guard 1 (Bae Seong-yoon, class of 2003), and Guard 2 (Jang Han-sae, class of 2008). Working on this film gave students and alumni of the Im Kwon Taek College of Film and Media Arts an opportunity to demonstrate the skills they learned in class and in the film studio.

Kim Ji-su of the recording team expressed gratitude to DSU saying, “I’m very proud to have entered Dongseo University. Most film majors in our country struggle to get involved professionally in their field, even after graduation, and I’d like to thank DSU for allowing me to improve my skills and gain professional experience while in school. Also, I’d like to thank Professor Kim Dae-seung from the Im Kwon Taek College of Film and Media Arts. I’ll strive to realize Dongseo University’s motto of BDAD through my experiences in this field.”
