Thirty students from three countries who participated in the CAMPUS Asia program recently completed their four-year curriculum and are now set to become leaders in the Era of Asia. Dongseo University in Korea, Guangdong University of Foreign Studies in China, and Ritsumeikan University in Japan are three of the universities that participated in this training project in Liberal Arts education for the next generation in East Asia.

The ten students from each university in the three countries primarily studied Korean, Chinese, and Japanese languages along with courses covering the cultures and histories of the three countries. Their studies were enhanced by travelling between the countries every year.

Due to this unique curriculum, the students learned to speak all three languages fluently. In addition, through networking and gaining knowledge of Liberal Arts as well as understanding about Asia, the students developed a foundation from which to grow as leaders in Korea, China, and Japan.

The graduation ceremony, which highlighted the achievements of four years of study, was held at Guangdong University of Foreign Studies on January 17th. The presidents of the three universities awarded degree certificates from each university to the students and complimented them on their efforts.

President Jekuk Chang commented on Facebook saying, “Over the past 4 years, students have studied together while moving between three countries. The students in this program can now speak Korean, Chinese, and Japanese fluently. They also improved their understanding of culture, history, and many other things. In the future, I am looking forward to seeing their contributions toward furthering cooperation between our three countries. I am very proud of our students!”

The presidents of Dongseo University, Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, and Ritsumeikan University signed an agreement for the permanent establishment of CAMPUS Asia so that more students may benefit through the program. The CAMPUS Asia program arose following the China-Japan-South Korea Trilateral Summit in May of 2010, where agreement was reached to extend exchanges among universities in the three countries. CAMPUS Asia was benchmarked on the European Region Action Scheme for the Mobility of University Students Programme (ERASMUS).

Among the eight Korean universities selected for the program were Dongseo University, Pusan National University, Seoul National University, Sungkyunkwan University, POSTECH, KAIST, and KDI Graduate School.
