Dongseo University professors along with graduate and undergraduate students attended design exhibitions and workshops at universities in both the United States and Australia during the summer vacation. By attending these events, DSU strived to improve the exchange of information within the design industry.

The first event attended was a 3-week training program and workshop held at the School of Visual Arts (SVA), located in New York City, from July 13th to the 31st. The SVA is among the top design schools in the United States. Ten talented students were selected to join the program. During their time at SVA, they learned to broaden their design skills and joined an international design workshop. This program was offered through the Design Honor Society to help educate global designers. After completing the program, the students submitted a report detailing their experiences.

The 3-week program cost 6 million won per student; however, the CK Group provided each student with 5 million won to assist with travel, accommodation, and other costs, so the students were responsible for paying only 1 million won each. Before embarking on their program in the U.S., the students received intensive English language lessons to help them successfully take on this challenge as international designers.

Professor Yoon Ji-young, who was in charge of the USA training program, said, “I think that Dongseo University’s established relationship with SVA is useful in helping students learn internationally. Our students can expect to learn not only through their undergraduate courses, but also through gaining international viewpoints and cultural experiences.”

The next event took faculty and students to another country and another hemisphere. Members of Dongseo University’s BK21 Plus, an ICT-based cultural and marine design business team, together with the Korea Society of Basic Design and Art, one of Korea’s largest domestic design engineering teams, held an international design exhibition. This took place at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia from July 29th to August 8th. The theme of the exhibition focused on marine and cultural designs. Of the 101 works on display, 25 were submitted by BK21 members. Professors and students from 17 different countries, including Korea, Germany, and Italy, attended the event.

The leader of BK21, Professor Kang Bum-gyu, along with Professor Lee Dong-hun, Professor Kim Se-hwa, researcher Lee Bo-bae, and graduate students participated in this event, after hosting another international marine design workshop in the U.S. the previous year. Professor Kang commented on the recent event saying, “I think that BK21 can become a leader in marine design by continually hosting international exhibitions where works can be displayed and information can be exchanged. I am sure there will be active international exchanges between Dongseo University and professors and students from other countries.”
