This past August, Dongseo University students came away with top prizes from two business-venture related contests hosted by the City of Busan. The winning students credit the unique education they have received at DSU with their success. The contests were the 2015 Busan Start-up Contest and the First IP Venture Challenge Camp.

Start-up Contest

The Busan Start-up Contest was held on August 27 and 28 at the Busan Start-up Café in Song Sanghyeon Square in Busanjin-gu. The contest, hosted by the City of Busan and run by the Busan Economic Promotion Agency, required participants to develop an idea for a start-up company. There were 247 participants in the contest grouped into 49 teams. The participants came from high schools and universities throughout Korea.

The winner of the grand prize, which was a trip to Silicon Valley in California, was a team from DSU consisting of freshmen and sophomores. The members of the team were Lee Seung-heon, Heo Yu-gyeong, and Cha Yeong-hun. Their academic adviser was Prof. Moon Mi-gyeong. The three students’ idea was a start-up that would develop a very well designed selfie stick specifically for use by tourists who want to take pictures at Haeundae Beach and other famous tourist destinations in Busan. The team will also have the opportunity to participate in the Korea Venture League, which is sponsored by the Korea Institute of Start-up and Entrepreneurship Development.

The DSU students were very happy with the results of the contest. Lee Seung-heon said that he had “learned a lot” by participating in the contest, especially about working in a group. He noted that, “in some teams, people worked well together and developed good ideas, but in other teams there was only conflict and nothing good was developed.” Meanwhile, Heo Yu-gyeong was happy about the “new experience,” and saw how important it was for people to develop new ideas. Cha Yeong-hun was “excited by the outcome,” and felt that “by being able to develop fresh ideas I will be able to achieve what I wish in life.”

Venture Challenge Camp

The First IP (intellectual property) Venture Challenge Camp for University Students was held on August 21, 22, and 23 at the Seongho Easthill Resort in Gyeongju. The camp was hosted by the City of Busan, the Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO), and KIPO’s Regional Intellectual Property Division, and run jointly by seven universities located in Busan. There were 70 participants, all of whom were chosen by their universities, grouped into 15 teams.

The purpose of the camp was for the teams to develop intellectual property that could be used by the five industries that the City of Busan designated in 2014 as their key growth industries. These are the Marine, Convergence Components and Materials, Creative Culture, Bio-health, and Knowledge Infrastructure Services Industries. Each team concentrated on developing intellectual property for one of these five strategic industries. The teams gave presentations, and on the last day the hosts selected five winning teams based on the creativity and suitability of their ideas.

DSU sophomore Ryu Min-cheol, who majors in Business Administration was one of the big winners and received one million won in prize money. Three other DSU students, Kim Do-um, Lee Gyun-hwan, and Kim Jun-seong, each received five hundred thousand won in prize money for participating in the event. Their academic adviser was Prof. Ahn Sang-hyeop.

Top prize winner Ryu Min-cheol said that the experience at the camp has made him think seriously about devoting his career to developing intellectual property. “I am really interested in developing ideas that can be patented,” he said.
