The Center for Chinese Studies at Dongseo University opened on September 16. The main purpose of the center is to focus on China’s influence on Korean economics, safety, and production techniques. By opening this center, DSU can establish itself as an expert in these fields within Northeast Asia (Korea, Japan, and China). Shin Jung-seung, a Korean Ambassador to China, was invited to lead the Center.

Cho Sae-young, Head of the Japan Research Center and Director of a bureau of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MOFAT), expects great results from the Japan and China centers since they have exceptional experience in diplomacy.

The Center for Chinese Studies is striving to achieve many different objectives. First, it intends to become a base institution of China research in Korea. Second, it plans to give a leading role to the public of Busan. Third, it is trying to help DSU become a China networking hub in Northeast Asia. The future of the Center will involve public use that contributes to Busan and the Republic of Korea, rather than only to the university.

The Center for Chinese Studies will act as a lighthouse, leading China and Korea toward cooperative policies. Medium and long term trends for China and Northeast Asia will determine the way DSU develops in regard to China and North Korea, offering education infrastructure and building both internal and external networks.

DSU President Jekuk Chang, Head of China Research Center Shin Jung-seung, Main Chinese Consul General of Busan Yeng Pyung-ran, International Relations Ambassador of Busan Shin Young-sung, and many other prominent figures participated in the opening ceremony.

Following the ceremony, Honorary Professor of Korea University Seo Jin-young gave a keynote lecture titled, “China Research and Korean-Chinese Relations.” Following the lecture, Seoul National University Political Diplomacy Professor Jung Jae-ho and Assistant Head of the DSU China Center Lee Hong-kyu gave a presentation titled, “How Do You Research China in Busan?” International Affairs Professor of Catholic University Kim Jae-chul and East Asia Professor of Korea Maritime and Ocean University Kim Tae-man participated in debates.
