GSI prepares the first special lecture this semester. The lecture is about MUSIC this time.

- Title: From Reggae to Hip Hop
- Venue: GSI 704
- Date and Time: March 29th, 13:00-15:00
- Lecturer: Gordon Bazsali

- Lecture description
In this lecture, we will look back on how, just as early rock and roll was born from jazz, blues, new technology and a budding youth culture, Jamaicans living in slums took those records and mixed it with the rhythms of the islands to create reggae and used it to fight for equality. In the second hour, we will see how reggae came of age and when transplanted to the tough streets of New York City, became the foundation for what we now know as hiphop. We will also examine what I call the "four pillars of hiphop" and see how it is far more than simply a music genre: it is a cultural phenomenon.. a way of life.
