Mr. Bessho Koro, Japanese Ambassador to South Korea, gave a special lecture at DSU’s Minseok Library on October 30th, 2013. Ambassador Bessho spoke in detail about his views on the present and future relationship between Korea and Japan. The insightful lecture was attended by international students, graduate students, and students majoring in Japanese.
Ambassador Bessho has been working as a diplomat for 40 years. He has also been a Section Chief for Northeast Asia, a Secretary for Former Prime Minister Mr. Koizumi, a Director of General Foreign Policy, and a Deputy Director General. He began his ambassadorial role a year ago on October 30th, 2012.
During his lecture, he emphasized that Korea and Japan are very important neighbours. He also acknowledged that they have faced some historical and territorial problems over the past few years, and that as a result of these problems, national sentiment has been getting worse in both countries. He suggested young people should try to solve these problems with patience so that a healthy future-oriented relationship can be fostered.
Ambassador Bessho also discussed Japan’s recent radioactivity readings, asking that Korea not jump to any rash conclusions about them. He assured the audience that the Japanese government has been cooperating with the International Atomic Energy Agency in checking radioactivity.
He finished his lecture by telling the captivated DSU audience that he would not forget this occasion, falling as it did on his one year anniversary since becoming Japan’s ambassador to South Korea.
