Twenty-nine students majoring in Design at Dongseo University departed on July 28th to volunteer in the city of Paju in Gyeonggi Province. This is the fifth year DSU has sent student volunteers to the area during summer vacation.
The volunteer project titled ‘Making the Haemaruchon Design Village’ began in 2010. This year, students completed eight sculptures of elk, a symbol of the Haemaruchon Village, for a newly opened park in Paju City. DSU students have so far contributed a total of 20 sculptures of elk through this project. The completion of the park benefits not only residents but also soldiers at the nearby military base as well as family members visiting them on weekends.
There are 56 families comprising the 140 residents living in Haemaruchon. The village was initially a settlement for displaced people following the Korean War and was closed off to ordinary citizens, which has kept the natural ecosystem well-preserved.
