Students will soon have access to high-quality lectures offered online by Asian universities through Global Access Asia (GAA), which is an Asian version of a MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) consortium.

Many universities, including Dongseo University in Korea, Asia University in Japan, Bangkok University in Thailand, Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) in Malaysia, Shandong University in China, Ho Chi Minh City University of Transport in Vietnam, and Mykolos Romeris University in Lithuania, will create a joint online platform providing courses for students on a range of subjects.

About 60 universities belonging to the Asian University Presidents Forum (AUPF), which was recently held in Thailand, may collaborate in launching the new joint project. Each university may offer courses in its area of specialization and may select highly distinguished professors to develop and offer excellent online educational contents. Among the many courses offered, there will be a focus on the diverse cultures and role of Asia.

GAA originated through a suggestion at AUPF 2013 hosted by UniMAP. Over the following year a task force with members from Bangkok University, Dongseo University, Josai International University, and UniMAP met to discuss project details. On October 24th, GAA was officially approved following its proposal in a presentation given by DSU President Jekuk Chang at AUPF 2014 hosted by Christian University of Thailand.

Dongseo University will play a leading role in the construction and operation of this platform by setting up the server system, learning management system and academic administration system as well as opening online classes.

President Jekuk Chang said, “The establishment of the GAA platform will enable us to become an international provider of high-quality educational contents, rather than a receiver of online contents from mainly U.S.-based universities.”

As Asia gains prominence, there will be a large advantage in Asian universities offering superior contents created from Asian perspectives. Also, globalization within the field of higher education has become more feasible through advancements in online technologies. Students are now able to receive a high-quality education at a low cost, and the advent of MOOCs allows universities to invest more heavily in their own strengths by cutting their administrative costs.

The launch of GAA is set for September 2015, and the platform may grow in following years as new members join and as original members increase the number of courses offered. The lectures provided through GAA will all be in English, though subtitles may also be available in many languages. Students of participating universities will be able to take the courses for free to earn credits at their home university. Each course will follow a 15 week schedule during the spring or fall semester.

The GAA platform is an official affiliate of the Asian University Presidents Forum (AUPF), which has about 80 members, located mostly in Asia. The Forum meets annually and was hosted by Dongseo University in 2012. It aims to promote development and cooperation in higher education.
