Despite the cold weather, a group of compassionate Dongseo University students is headed to Sorok Island. The 20 students in the DSU Volunteer Corps will help during their winter vacation at the Sorok National Hospital, which houses 600 patients.

A commencement ceremony was held on the 6th floor of DSU’s U-IT building on January 17th to offer appreciation and encouragement to the many students who have agreed to give selflessly of their time and effort. In the past, the DSU Volunteer Corps offered services on Sorok Island only during the summer vacation period; however, this year the program was expanded to include the winter vacation period as well. The students have dedicated themselves to helping the elderly and infirm by ensuring the patients have meals, clean rooms, and someone to keep them company.

Kim Hyo-yeon from the Department of Nursing said, “This is the second time I have participated in the volunteer services at Sorok Island. Last year, I spent about two months on the Island and now I feel very comfortable there. It is like my second hometown! I am especially thankful for the opportunity to help the grandmothers and grandfathers there. It gives me a sense of warmth and reward to be able to help.”
