Six students majoring in product design at DSU were awarded prizes at the 2010 International Design Right Fair co-hosted by the Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO) and the Korea International Trade Association. DSU was given the most awards of any university, and DSU’s Professor Ko Kyung Wook was awarded the Academic Adviser Award.

Chung Jae Gwan was awarded KIPO Commissioner Prize of 3 million won for his work titled “The Stick is a Second Ear.” Five students received the CEO Awards. Kim In Young won for Kooksoondang, Yang Jeong Ah won for Green Child, Chun Sung Min won for Design Mall, Kim Tae Hoon won for Taeha Mechatronics and Chang Sung Chul won for Haengnam Chinaware. The prize money for each was 1 million won. This contest exhibited 578 works from 47 universities nationwide. DSU students’ exhibited works were prepared as graduate projects.

Chang Sung Chul said, “Designers usually stick to their own thoughts. However, our class students had discussed their own ideas for several months. I think sharing and discussing ideas has brought about good results.”

Professor Ko said, “We focused on practicality and the pragmatic side rather than on ideal design because this contest is associated with the company products. Our students’ winning of awards in an open contest has demonstrated the capability of DSU.”

The International Design Right Fair, which started in 2006, is an open innovation project which students submit creative designs for the type of products of sponsor company’s interests, among which the evaluators choose and award outstanding designs. The winning works of this contest were exhibited at the 2010 Trademark-Design Exhibition at the COEX from December 2nd to 5th.
