DSU College of Design Hosts “Asia Global Design Workshop” with Kyushu Sangyo University

27 Years of International Exchange Expands into Urban Regeneration Projects and Global Collaboration for Future Design Talent

The College of Design at Dongseo University hosted the Asia Global Design Workshop from August 5 to 7, inviting 15 students and two faculty members from Kyushu Sangyo University in Japan. The program was organized as a return visit following the global design workshop held at Kyushu Sangyo University from June 24 to 27, when Dongseo University students traveled to Japan.

The workshop formed part of the international exchange program that the two universities have continued for 27 years. Over the years, Dongseo University and Kyushu Sangyo University have maintained active student exchanges and joint projects, establishing a strong model of collaboration in global design education and developing a range of international programs aimed at fostering future design talent.
During the workshop, students from Dongseo University’s College of Design presented the outcomes of an urban regeneration project conducted in Tsuyazaki, Fukuoka Prefecture, during their previous visit to Japan. Hosu Jang, Jaemin Cheon, Youngjun Choi, Chaemin Baek, and Jeongwon Choi proposed creative urban regeneration ideas reflecting the history, culture, and spatial characteristics of the local community, drawing strong interest from participants.

Students from Dongseo University and Kyushu Sangyo University then formed mixed Korean–Japanese teams and participated in a collaborative workshop on urban regeneration. Drawing on their different cultural backgrounds and disciplinary strengths, the students exchanged diverse perspectives and developed their ideas together. Through team presentations, they proposed urban regeneration design solutions that combined creativity with practical feasibility.

The workshop served as a hands-on international education program that enabled students to strengthen their global collaboration and problem-solving skills beyond the boundaries of nationality and academic discipline.
During their stay, Kyushu Sangyo University students also toured Dongseo University’s Centum Campus and experienced its design education environment. As part of the cultural exchange program, they visited F1963, one of Busan’s major cultural complexes, and Gamcheon Culture Village, where they explored examples of urban regeneration integrating culture and the arts.
Dongseo University’s College of Design and Kyushu Sangyo University plan to continue operating joint classes and global projects to strengthen students’ international collaboration capabilities and design competitiveness. The two institutions will also expand their partnership toward establishing a leading global design education model in Asia.

Joint Discussion with Kyushu Sangyo University Faculty of Design Students on Design Solutions for Social Issues

Haruki Igarashi, a student from Kyushu Sangyo University’s Faculty of Design, said, “I was particularly impressed by ideas that identified and reinterpreted local issues from an outsider’s perspective—issues that even Japanese people had not fully recognized. The presentations by Dongseo University students, which approached Japanese traditions and regional social issues through design, were very impressive and gave me a meaningful opportunity to gain new perspectives.”

Saki Ejima added, “It was very interesting to see Korean and Japanese students exchange ideas and work together to create a shared outcome. By sharing different cultures and ways of thinking, I was able to see the potential of design as a means of addressing social issues. I hope to continue participating in international exchange programs like this in the future.”
Professor Juyoung Chang, Dean of the College of Design at Dongseo University, said, “Dongseo University and Kyushu Sangyo University have maintained student exchanges and collaborative projects for 27 years, building a representative model of design education cooperation in Asia. I hope this workshop provides students with a valuable global collaboration experience in which they can understand different cultures and solve problems together beyond national borders.”
She added, “The two universities will continue to expand joint classes and international projects so that students can develop into future professionals equipped with global design capabilities and creative problem-solving skills. Through sustained international exchange, we will work together to build a global design education platform that connects Asia with the wider world.”
This Asia Global Design Workshop was conducted with the support of Dongseo University’s ANCHOR Project Group.
