On Wednesday, September 2, beginning at 10:00 a.m., the ADCC Secretariat hosted an ADCC Asia Design Special Lecture featuring Professor Ikjoon Chang of Chiba University, Japan. The lecture was organized to provide students with opportunities to explore a wide range of design issues that are difficult to address within the regular curriculum by inviting international experts in the field.

The lecture was held under the theme, “Creativity from a Design Perspective.” Professor Chang introduced how his own perspectives as a designer have evolved and developed over time and, based on these experiences, discussed the new roles required of contemporary design and designers.

Through a variety of case studies, the lecture examined how design can serve as a medium for connecting people with spaces and people with one another. Topics included improving user experiences through designers’ creativity, strengthening connections between people and spaces through enhanced signage systems, and using design to communicate the culture and distinctive characteristics of local communities. These examples provided an opportunity to reflect on the broader roles that design performs in contemporary society.

The lecture also addressed more in-depth aspects of professional design practice, including the importance of approaching design from a marketing perspective beyond technical expression skills, as well as adopting a user-centered approach throughout the design process.

The lecture was attended by undergraduate and graduate students from Dongseo University as well as students from Chiba University, and was supported by Dongseo University’s ANCHOR Project Group.
