Dongseo University RISE Project Group

Expands International Exchange Through Global Workshop with Musashino Art University

Dongseo University’s RISE Project Group further expanded the achievements of global design exchange through participation in a global workshop held on August 21 under the leadership of Professor Shiraishi Manabu of the Department of Design Informatics at Musashino Art University in Japan. Research Professor Jihye Kim and academic researchers (Lee Junhee of the Department of Advertising & Public Relations, Yoo Jihye of the Department of Digital Media Design, Lee Heewon of the Department of Visual Design, and four additional students) from Dongseo University participated in the program. This workshop marked not only the result of the RISE Project Group’s continued efforts to build global networks and foster next-generation design talent, but also the first global workshop held within the framework of over 20 years of international exchange between Dongseo University’s Design College and Musashino Art University, serving as an opportunity to elevate the partnership between the two institutions to a new stage.

The global workshop was conducted under the theme “Interaction Design Workshop - Sound & Visual -.” Students connected LED lights and sensors using Arduino and carried out various experiments that responded to users’ movements and distance, gaining firsthand experience with the principles of interaction design.

Participants shared the research content of the ongoing “3℃ Project” and the “Children’s Color Education System” with students and faculty members from Musashino Art University. Through new perspectives provided by the Japanese participants, discussions were held regarding future directions for project development and possible design applications. Various suggestions and ideas for improvement were exchanged during the process, further expanding the potential for international joint research between the two universities.

After the workshop, an exchange gathering was organized where students from both universities made and shared okonomiyaki, one of Japan’s representative dishes, while exchanging thoughts about each other’s daily lives and cultures through food and conversation. Through this experience, students were able to build meaningful friendships that extended beyond academic exchange.

Jihye Yoo, a participating student, commented, “Even within a short schedule, I was able to gain valuable experiences through presentations, international exchange, classes, and exhibition visits,” adding, “I believe this will become a unique and valuable asset for me even after entering society.” Professor Shiraishi of Musashino Art University also expressed his hopes for continued collaboration, stating, “I look forward to further expanding cooperation between the two institutions through global research and joint project development.”

Dongseo University’s RISE Project Group stated that the workshop provided students with opportunities to broaden their global perspectives and gain practical collaborative experience, adding that the university plans to continue expanding opportunities for global design education in the future. Meanwhile, participation in this global workshop was supported through the budget of Dongseo University’s RISE project, providing students with valuable opportunities to gain academic experience on the global stage.
