Cross-Media Creative Design Global Workshop in Shanghai

In the summer of 2025, students from the Dongseo University College of Design traveled to Shanghai, China, to participate in the Cross-Media Creative Design Global Workshop.

The program brought together students from various countries and was designed to promote international exchange and collaborative experiences centered on design.

Learning in a New Environment

After arriving in Shanghai, students visited local universities and began the program through campus tours and welcome sessions. These activities provided opportunities to introduce themselves, share expectations, and become familiar with the upcoming workshop activities.

Experiencing local educational environments, studio systems, and exhibition spaces also allowed students to broaden their perspectives on design education and creative practice.

Experiencing the City and Culture Through Design

The program utilized the city itself as a learning environment.

Students explored traditional villages, historic streets, and water towns in and around Shanghai, directly experiencing how urban structure, local culture, and history influence design.

Visits to museums and cultural heritage sites further deepened students’ understanding of the relationship between regional history, art, and design.

Hands-on Design Practice

The workshop extended beyond conceptual discussions and included practical making experiences.

Through ceramic-making sessions, students worked directly with materials and forms, gaining a deeper understanding of physicality, craftsmanship, and the production process in design.

This experience encouraged students to reconsider the fundamental sensory aspects of design beyond digital-centered creative methods.

Collaborative Outcomes Through Global Teamwork

In the latter part of the program, students participated in a global collaborative workshop.

Working in multicultural teams, students developed ideas based on diverse cultural perspectives and completed collaborative outcomes together. Despite differences in language and environment, students naturally communicated and collaborated through their shared interest in design.

The program concluded with presentations and exhibitions of each team’s work, allowing participants to exchange feedback and gain insight into one another’s creative processes.

Expanding the Possibilities of Design

Throughout the program, students experienced learning opportunities that extended far beyond a conventional field trip or short-term workshop.

Working with students from different countries and directly engaging with unfamiliar cultural environments became an important opportunity to develop global perspectives and collaborative capabilities.

Students also came to understand how design is closely connected to culture, environment, and materiality, enabling them to approach design from broader and more expanded perspectives.

The Shanghai workshop ultimately became a meaningful experience of understanding others, collaborating across cultures, and creating shared outcomes through design.

For the participating students, the program provided an important foundation for engaging with a wider global context and discovering new possibilities for the future.
