동서대 디자인대학과 미국 퍼듀대(Purdue University)는 5월 11일부터 18일까지 우리대학에서 공동워크숍을

개최했다.

동서대에서는 학생 12명·교수 4명, 퍼듀대에서는 학생 9명·교수 3명이 참여했다. 한국디자인진흥원에서도

연구원들이 참여했다. 동서대와 퍼듀대 학생의 워크숍 참가 소감을 들어봤다. (편집자 설명)

미국 퍼듀대 산업디자인학과와 디자인 공동 워크숍이 올해 처음 시도되면서, 우리가 본보기가 되어야한다는

부담감과 디자인대학의 글로벌 프로그램인 GDS(Global Design Society) 대표학생으로서의 책임감에 걱정

반, 기대 반으로 워크숍을 기다려왔다. 퍼듀대 학생들이 한국에 도착하고 처음 만났을 때가 기억이 난다. 서로

인사를 하고 내가 대표로서 주도하면서 이끌어가다보니 자연스럽게 그 친구들에게 캡틴으로 불리기 시작했다.

그 이후로 내 이름보다 캡틴으로 더 많이 불리게 되는 해프닝이 있었는데, 오히려 미국 친구들과 편하고 친해질

수 있었던 계기가 되었던 것 같다.

각기 다른 문화를 가진 두 나라가 공동 팀 프로젝트를 하기 위해선 실력도 실력이지만 무엇보다 팀워크가

필수적이다. 그러기 위해선 서로에 대해서 이해하고 많이 소통하며 동화될 수 있는 것이 중요했다. 한국디자인

진흥원 양산센터에서 팀과 주제를 선정하고 5월 11일부터 본격적으로 프로젝트를 진행하게 되었는데, 처음에

는 서로 다른 관점과 작업 프로세스를 가지고 있어서 소통이 어려워 보였다.

하지만 그 걱정은 빠르게 해소되었고 2박3일 집중연수를 통해서 우리는 하나의 공동 목표로서 서로의 장점과

단점을 살려 더 큰 시너지 효과를 볼 수 있었다. 아침부터 밤늦게까지 진행되었던 회의로 피곤하지만, 미국

친구들과 우리의 관점을 서로 공유하여 많은 것들을 깨달을 수 있었던 좋은 기회가 되었다. 2주라는 짧은 시간

이었지만 최종 발표를 위해 밤새워가며 격려하며 함께 작업도 하였고, 주말엔 부산 투어를 안내하면서 돈독한

정들을 쌓아갔다. 우리가 미국을 멀고 다르게만 생각했지만 그들도 똑같은 사람이고 크게 다를 게 없다는 것을

깨달았다.

2주간의 여정을 끝마치고 아쉬움을 뒤로한 채 오는 8월 퍼듀대에서 진행될 2차 워크숍을 고대하며 퍼듀 친구

들과 다시 만날 것을 약속했다. 꾸준히 온라인을 통해서 교류를 하면서 우리의 아이템을 고도화시키기로 하였다

. 우리 뿐 아니라 이성필 교수님을 비롯해 많은 교수님들께서 원활한 워크숍 진행을 위해 고생해주셨고, 팀 프로

젝트에 대한 피드백도 다양하게 주셔서 좋은 성과를 낼 수 있지 않았나 생각이 든다. 어쨌든 다가올 8월의 미국

에서 우리의 글로벌 열정을 다시 한 번 불태우러 떠나볼까 한다.

Overall experience was amazing,

and it is something that myself and the Purdue students will never

forget

Traveling to Busan, South Korea to work with the DSU design students was a once in a lifetime

experience. Nine of the Industrial Design students from Purdue were given the privilege to journey

to DSU and work on a smart home service design project alongside the amazing DSU design

students.

We began our journey meeting the Korean students and they welcomed us into their country by

introducing us to their food and culture. We were excited to see the beautiful nature and traditional

sights that Busan had to offer us. The DSU students took us to some of the best spots in Busan and

showed us what it means to be a student in Korea. After some fun experiences and bonding between

the students, we were shown the projects that the DSU students had been working on.

The projects showed incredible potential and us Purdue students were excited to jump in and begin

collaborating. We broke off into three teams focusing on smart home bathrooms, social gatherings

or parties, and food. The teams consisted of three Purdue students and four DSU students.

We all began our research portion of the project by experiencing our topics in Korean lifestyle.

For example, the smart home bathroom team traveled to one of the Korean student’s homes and

saw how a traditional Korean bathroom differed from an American bathroom.

After conducting some research, our professors brought us to a retreat spot in the countryside of

Busan where we focused solely on our projects and getting as much data collected as possible.

We all did extensive research using the perspectives of both the Korean and American viewpoints.

This research was so crucial because it was able to showcase the differences in cultures but also

the similarities. In these comparing and contrasting details, we were able to find opportunities in the

smart home design. We learned a lot from the Korean students including design methodologies,

illustration skills, and design techniques.

Overall the experience was amazing, and it is something that myself and the Purdue students will

never forget. We are so humbled to be able to work with such outstanding students from DSU and

look forward to working with them again when they come to America in August!
